The April monthly club meeting was held on Tuesday,
April 11, 2006, at the American Red Cross building in
southeast Rochester.
Program: The EOC - Jon Turk

Jon Turk discusses the EOC.

It was RARC's distinct pleasure to have Officer Jon Turk of the EOC at the April 2006 RARC meeting. Officer Turk is the Director of Communications at the EOC, and he discussed a number of functions that he is responsible for there (including Skywarn.) A number of upgrades at the EOC were described including facility upgrades and access policy changes. Officer Turk further explained the chain of command at the EOC: Joe Loftus (Director of Emergency Management), Jon Turk (Director of Communications) and Steve Wiebke. Steve will act as a go-between person for RARC and the EOC.
Amateur operators will still help with Skywarn nets. When spotters are activated, Officer Turk would like to stagger more spotters throughout the county (with more spotters deployed to the eastern part of Olmsted county.)
|
Regular Skywarn nets will begin after Memorial Day and will conclude after Labor Day. It is expected that the net will be either weekly or bi-monthly on Monday nights at 9:00pm on the 147.255 repeater.
A number of other exciting announcements were made: APRS is coming to the EOC, and you will be seen if you have APRS running. Amateur TV is being looked at for Channel 21 so that spotters have access to radar while activated. An emergency drill will be held sometime in the middle of September (more information to come.) There was even mention of gathering volunteers willing to put on a parachute. ;-)
Officer Turk asked that the 146.820 repeater be used for discussion and
the 147.255 be kept clear for Skywarn reports during activation.
Officer Turk emphasized that the EOC will gladly offer tours. An open
house will be held in the future (probably during a RARC
meeting.)
